Hydrogen Day: The pace of hydrogen and fuel cell activity accelerates across the globe, including California

Today is Hydrogen Day, and it serves as a good opportunity to look at what’s happening in California and beyond. The pace of activity for hydrogen and fuel cell electric cars, buses, trucks and other forms of mobility has rapidly accelerated over the past year here and around the world.  

Throughout today, on social media - LinkedIn, Twitter or Facebook - we will look back over the past year at the various activities in California that are helping to move fuel cell electric vehicles and hydrogen fueling infrastructure forward.

In September, for example, we witnessed several significant announcements.

Governor’s executive order on zero-emission vehicles
Last month, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed a bold executive order to accelerate the transition to zero-emission vehicles and fuels. The order requires that 100 percent of in-state new car sales will be zero-emission vehicles (or ZEVs) by 2035.

100+ hydrogen stations recommended for funding
The California Energy Commission released a recommended list of three awardees – FirstElement, Iwatani Corporation of America and Shell -  for hydrogen station funding. More than 100 proposed hydrogen stations were recommended, with around 36 recommended for the first batch of funding. 

Hydrogen Station Permitting Guidebook
The Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development released their updated Hydrogen Station Permitting Guidebook. The guidebook is intended to help local jurisdictions and hydrogen station developers navigate and streamline the station development process.
