In recognition of Hydrogen Day—October 8—the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office (HFTO) invites you to learn about FIRST Global's Hydrogen Horizons Challenge, a competition co-sponsored by DOE that will inspire the next generation of problem solvers to tackle the globe's energy challenges using science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). 

Running from October 7–10 in Singapore, the Hydrogen Horizons Challenge features student teams from 190 countries focused specifically on the important role of hydrogen in our global renewable energy and net-zero-carbon future. DOE is a co-sponsor of the Hydrogen Horizons Challenge, the 2023 edition of FIRST Global's annual competition. 

Student teams will use their creativity and problem-solving skills to design and build a skilled robot from a standard kit of parts. Teams must then navigate their robot in a simulation to produce hydrogen and use it to store, transport, and convert energy. 

"We're so pleased to be part of this exciting event that puts the power of clean hydrogen in the hands of future scientists from around the world," said HFTO Director Dr. Sunita Satyapal. "Advancing clean hydrogen is, first and foremost, a global effort. The Hydrogen Horizons competition is a perfect way to celebrate Hydrogen Day and to encourage academic and career paths in clean hydrogen and fuel cells." 

Dr. Satyapal will speak at this event, and she will be joined by other HFTO staff and fellows, who will help judge the competition. 

FIRST Global is a nonprofit founded by Segway inventor Dean Kamen. Previous FIRST Global Challenges have been held in Washington D.C. (2017), Mexico City (2018), Dubai (2019), and Geneva (2022).
